The Town Of Greenwich seems to be unaware that the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Southwestern Connecticut plans is shut down and turning over the town patients to a Wallingford Visiting Nurse Service by late November.

Greenwich seniors who need home health care will no longer serviced by the Stamford-based agency that has operated in Fairfield County since 1912.

The Visiting Nurse service provided hundreds town seniors with nursing and home health aide services, as well as physical, speech and occupational therapy and social work services.

The Visiting Nurse agency employs more than 130 full-time and per-diem employees, many of whom are dispatched daily to assist Greenwich seniors.

At the very least, the Greenwich Department of Social services should oversee and monitor the transition and transfer of town patients from VNHC's care to Masonicare Home Health of Wallingford,

Or better yet, the Greenwich Department of Social services should locate other local agencies to ensure quality of care is maintained for Greenwich Seniors.

VNHC management and employees seem to be more interested in gaining employment with Wallingford based Masonicare instead of finding Greenwich seniors locally based care.

Some local home health aids have told Greenwich Roundup that Masonicare is a bureaucratic nightmare that employs 2,500 people statewide, including 1,200 in its home care division alone.

A VNHC-Masonicare Advisory Board is being established in the coming weeks to prepare Masonicare for the flood of hundreds of VNHC patients including patients from the Richard C. Rosenthal Hospice for terminally ill patients.

Letters notifying Greenwich patients about the decision were sent out this week.

The letters also provided additional information on making a choice between Masonicare or another health or hospice provider if necessary.

But Greenwich seniors need more information and help in transferring to smaller and more local home health services.

The effect on the great majority of Greenwich VNHC patients who receive home health care and hospice care is expected to be horribly disruptive if they are care for out of Wallingford.

The Town of Greenwich Social Services Department should step in to assist Greenwich seniors in finding a local area health or hospice provider.

Calls from Greenwich Roundup to the state Department of Health regarding the proposed closure were not returned as of press time tonight.

Greenwich VNHC nurses carry a caseload of 20 to 25 patients each week, and are responsible for balancing their group's treatment needs.

Greenwich Roundup believes the arrangement with Masonicare will provide Greenwich seniors less control over the type of care they are given.

Will social workers or family members have to go up to the Wallingford corporate offices to complain?

Just how reliable will home health care be in Greenwich when it is dispatched out of Wallingford?

Greenwich seniors would be served by a local visiting nurse service, but no one in the town seems to be prepared to help them make the transfer.

Greenwich Roundup says, something needs to be done now to help the towns seniors who are being ignored and taken advantage of.

Does the town even maintain a list of local home health agencies?

Kimberly King, 49, of Armstrong Court was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on August 26. Police said an officer on patrol observed King’s car cross the double line on Holly Hill Lane at about 12:16 a.m.

Upon stopping the vehicle the officer detected an odor of alcohol on King’s breath and noticed she had slurred speech. King reportedly failed a sobriety test. She reportedly declined a urine test.

She was also charged with driving with a suspended license and failure to maintain lane.

King posted bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 8

08/29/11 Woman Charged with Assault Following Domestic Dispute

A 23-year-old female resident of North Water Street was arrested and charged with assault, strangulation, breach of peace and disorderly conduct on August 25 after she reportedly strangled her mother and pushed her head into a wall during an argument.

Police said they were called to the residence on a report of an altercation. Police said on arrival they learned that the 23-year-old had gotten into an argument with her mother that had escalated into a fight. The 23 year-old was held on bond and arraigned on Aug. 26.

HERE IS THE LATEST GREENWICH NEWS ABOUT THE AFTERMATH OF IRENE AND HOW TOWN RESIDENTS WILL BE EFFECTED:

Rampant coastal flooding, rivers and streams throughout Greenwich were well above flood stages, leading to several emergency evacuations.

The number of Greenwich residents without power is close to 14,000.

The eye of the storm passed through Greenwich at high tide, causing a nightmarish situation.

Hurricane Gloria hit during low tide during 1985, resulting in storm surges around 5 to 6 feet. The 1938 hurricane hit during high tide, causing extensive damage.

Hurricane / Tropical Storm Irene is officially "Post Tropical". The last public advisory was just issued by the National Hurricane Center.

But here comes Jose ....

Tropical Storm Jose: 12 AM ET, 40 mph winds, 1008 mb, moving N at 21 mph

There will be quiet weather today-upper 70s under sunshine.

For Those In The Dark: At 9am Rabbi Mitch at Temple Sholom offers kosher food, coffee, electricity to charge mobile devices and computers, and WiFi access

Town officials have consolidated the two shelters it operated as Irene rolled in Saturday evening - neither shelter was at capacity.

First Selectman Peter Tesei is sleeping at town hall due to a lack of power at home.

Parking rules will be suspended Monday, but will resume Tuesday.

Byram beach will be closed Monday, with an anticipated reopening Tuesday. The beach experienced moderate erosion, downed trees, a partial seawall collapse and a boat that grounded on the beach.

Byram Park will be open Monday, while Greenwich Point will open to boaters at noon, but only to those who present a boater identification.

Ferry service for Great Captains Island has been canceled for Monday and will be resumed Friday, while ferry service for Island Beach, where a section of the pier dislodged in the storm, is canceled for Monday and Tuesday.

The town Emergency Operations Center will be open Monday, with officials planning to make an announcement about the state of emergency by afternoon.

Public Schools will still start for Greenwich public school students as planned on Thursday, but all activities, mostly athletic practices, have all been cancelled for tomorrow.

The Above SLOSH model looks like an evacuation zone map for Pemberwick, but Mr. Finkbiener says it is not.

However the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map Firmette clip for a small section of the Byram River, should be compared to the SLOSH Map used by the Town of Greenwich according to Mr. Finkbiener.

In a CATAGORY 1 Hurricane, which Irene may not be at Connecticut landfall, only the lime green zone is indicated for impact.

In Pemberwick, this would only be Den Lane and River St, since rainfall is not included.

Once rainfall is added as a hazard, a very different picture emerges.

In an email interview Mr, Finkbiener told Greenwich Roundup ....

"The SLOSH map is mis-leading, since many residents may read the map as an evacuation zone map, which it is not, and conclude they are safe because they are in zone 2 or 3, which don't apply to this storm's slosh.

This is false, they are at risk due to river and stream urban flooding - not tidal storm surge.

For the purposes of the Pemberwick - Glenville area, the only Pemberwick streets on the list are there due to tidal flooding, which is not the primary risk.

And for the same reason, no Glenville streets are included, although many are at high risk right now!

Therefore, I urge the Pemberwick - Glenville Association and the Greenwich Emergency Management office to reformulate warnings and evacuations, based on the FEMA Flood hazard, which includes tidal, but more importantly, river and stream flooding due to excessive rainfall and intensity, which will be the killers in this storm event.

Again, to explain - SLOSH is the wind and tide risk without rainfall. FEMA FIRM is the combined flood risk based on hydrology, hydraulics of piping infrastructure, and the interaction between tides, storm surge and rainfall runoff."

The Town's Evacuation program appears to be based on the SLOSH Category I list only, not the FEMA Flood Insurance Risk mapping that is the basis of the Flood Hazard Overlay Regulations of the Town, Sec 6-139.

The Street list and SLOSH maps used by the Selectmen represent wind driven tidal flooding by salt water only, and ignore the rainfall, runoff, and urban flooding hazard of the rain component of the storm.

Pemberwick Streets are not included for this reason. Neither are the other non-shoreline flood prone areas included. The Byram, Mianus, and Horseneck Brook watershed flooding components are ignored.

The Town's Emergency Management Response should rely on the FEMA Maps of June 18, 2010 to assess flood risk and hazard.

It is important to understand that the SLOSH model is only for storm surge, not rain or fresh water flooding.

The Town appears not looking at the flood impact of rain in this analysis.

One must add the sea water run-up in the SLOSH model to the rivers and streams carry local flood waters into Pemberwick.

The SLOSH plus high-tide makes this a very serious event for everyone flooded in 2007.

I mis-spoke about Pemberwick Streets - most of them are on the Selectman's Notice of 8/26 6:15 pm. but on the map they are for hurricane Cat 2 & 3. Add Cat four, and you have a map similar to the FEMA FIRM for Pemberwick.

But the Glenville streets and all the other flood prone streets subject to river and stream flooding, but not tidal storm surge, are missing.

The reason is that the SLOSH model is for the purpose of separating the rising tide risk from the river flooding risk coming from upstream watershed areas. This is necessary in writing an evacuation plan for different types of storm events.

Thus the Selectmen, and specifically by identified parties of Mr. Warzoha and Ms. Baisley in their Press Release, representing Emergency Management and Dept of Health, have mis-led the public by mis-use of the SLOSH Model map document, and lack of a rainfall-flooding evacuation plan.

This may prove to be a life threatening error.

If Irene arrives as a tropical storm event, the SLOSH wave-energy run-up models are of NO relevance.

What is needed is focus on the lack of infrastructure repairs, and urban hydrology appropriate to coverage conditions of land use in Greenwich.

General Note:

It is understood that members of the community are anxious for information regarding the use of the fields and the student parking at Greenwich High School as well as the results of the environmental testing. Please be assured that the many agencies, departments and organizations involved are working at an expedited rate in order to assess the situation, and to plan for and conduct interim remediation efforts with a focus on opening fields as soon as possible to accommodate Fall sports and to minimize the disruption that a contingency plan will have on other fields in the community.

Rumors about the status of the fields persist. We encourage the community to rely on these written updates from the Town/Schools/Building Committee and written correspondence from your coaches and/or Principals regarding the details of your program. Please check emails and the District/High School Web Site regularly for these updates.

In general, the organizations involved are working until the last minute to open a field, as in the case of Cardinal Stadium, and so there is little opportunity for advanced notice. As soon as information has been confirmed and final decisions have been made concerning any aspect of this situation it will be communicated as quickly as possible. The community’s cooperation and patience as we navigate this very complex situation is appreciated.

Environmental Testing/Remediation:

The environmental evaluation at Greenwich High School is ongoing. Over 300 soil samples have been taken to date.

Early analysis reflects levels of PCBs from ‘non-detected’ to various levels in defined areas above the applicable cleanup standards. The Environmental Consultant (DTC) is developing an interim remediation plan in order to address the areas where contaminants were detected above the standards in order to open more of the fields. The applicable Federal and State cleanup standards for PCBs in soil is 1 milligram/kilogram (mg/kg). The attached figure depicts the PCB results obtained to date for shallow soil across the athletic fields. Other contaminants including arsenic and chlordane were detected at concentrations exceeding their respective cleanup standards in localized areas within the fields.

GHS West Parking Lot:

The removal of the contaminated piles of dirt in the west (back) parking lot and the restoration

of that lot for use will take at least 3-4 weeks. The investigation, removal and remediation of the contaminated soil is overseen by Federal, State and Local environmental and health officials, as well as two entities separate from the contractor licensed to remove the contaminated soil and remediate the site. There will be ongoing air-monitoring to

ensure the safety of all students, staff and workers during the soil removal process.

Health & Safety:

The Connecticut and Greenwich Departments of Health have provided information on PCB’s in the documents attached and posted to the web site. Exposure to the risks of PCB’s result from direct contact, inhalation, and/or ingestion. The District, Town and Building Committee are working closely with State and Federal Environmental and Health agencies/departments in order to minimize possible exposure. Air-monitoring has been ongoing both within and

outside of the building and will continue during the soil removal process. Thus far air monitoring has not detected any levels of PCB’s above standards. Fields and Parking lots will not be re-opened without the approval of the Local, State and Federal agencies involved.

The information that we have received to date tells us that no PCB’s have been detected in the ambient air, so exposure would be limited to contact with contaminated soil. While testing is still ongoing, we have been able to determine that most of the PCB’s have been detected either in deep soil borings, or in localized shallower areas around the fields.

The majority of the fields and parking lots have shown PCB’s are at acceptable levels. The Town/District has worked closely with State and Federal environmental and health officials who have approved opening fields as soil sample results are received and interim remedial measures are implemented to remove defined areas of PCB contaminated soil.

Parking/Traffic/Busing:

Parking at Greenwich High School is restricted to staff only for the start of school due to the removal of the contaminated piles of dirt in the west (back) parking lot and the restoration of that lot for use. It is estimated that this process will take at least 3-4 weeks. Therefore, student parking will not be permitted until further notice.

Plans have been developed to ensure bus capacity and to enhance traffic control measures. If eligible for transportation, please encourage students to take the bus in order to avoid a back up in drop off and pick up lines. If you must drive your children to school, please allow extra time. The start of the school day will NOT be delayed because of traffic.

Please note that parking on private property without permission will result in ticketing and/or towing. Parking on Hillside Road along the school property is permitted parking only and is restricted for staff.

Fields/Athletics:

Greenwich High School

Field #1 or Cardinal Stadium has been re-opened for practice. The Environmental Consultants, Local, State and Federal Agencies are working tirelessly in order to assess the situation, plan for and implement interim remediation efforts in order to properly address the areas of the fields that have been identified with PCB levels higher than the cleanup standard.

The goal is to address fields 3, 4, 6 & 7 in the immediate short-term in order to ready them for the fall sports program.

For the start of the season, practices and tryouts will be held at the Cardinal Stadium, middle

schools, Julian Curtiss School, and/or Greenwich Country Day School fields.

Athletic Department for details. This information will also be available on the District and high school web sites.

Coaches will communicate additional specifics directly to their teams as necessary.

Central, Eastern & Western Middle Schools:

The fall interscholastic middle school program will be delayed in order to cooperate with and accommodate the high school’s interscholastic athletic program. The high school teams will be using the middle school fields for practice after school until such time as the high school fields can be readied for use and re-opened. The goal is to have the fields open at the high school by mid to late September.

School Operations - Start of School:

At this time, school will open for students as scheduled.

MISA Building Committee: The Greenwich High School Music Instructional Space and Auditorium (GHS-MISA) project is moving ahead as scheduled. The North and South parking lots will be completed before the start of school.

Communications:

* Updates are posted to the District and Greenwich High School Web Sites as new information becomes available: www.greenwichschools.org - click on “Updates on Environmental Testing at GHS”.

* ParentLink/Email Communications are sent directly to GPS/GHS families as updates are released and new information is available.

* The Board of Education will receive an update on the MISA project and a status update on the Environmental Evaluation at its August 25, 2011 meeting, 7:00 PM at the Town Hall Meeting Room.

* The next regularly scheduled GHS-MISA Building Committee meeting is September 6, 2011, 7:30 AM, Havemeyer Building.

* The District will host a Open House on September 7, 2011, 7:00 PM-9:00 PM at Greenwich High School in order to provide an opportunity for high school families, neighbors, and the broader community to receive an overview of the situation and to ask questions of the various departments and agencies involved.

Background:

In mid July 2011, during the course of the excavation work for the Greenwich High School Music Instructional Space and Auditorium (MISA) project, unexpected soil conditions were discovered in the West (or back) parking lot, adjacent to the fields, which prompted immediate environmental testing.

The site work in the west lot was stopped and the excavation area was contained. The initial tests indicated the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations above acceptable standards for residential and commercial use, as determined by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), in deep soil in the excavation.

A second round of samples was taken on July 20th and included soil and indoor and outdoor air testing. The results of the air quality tests indicate all selected factors were within acceptable levels. The results of the second round of soil samples confirmed the previous results, which showed concentrations of PCBs above the residential cleanup standard along with low levels of some metals.

On July 29, 2011 the results of a third set of shallow soil samples taken closer to fields 3 and 4, reflected PCBs levels that are above acceptable standards for residential or commercial use. These results prompted the closure of all fields as a precaution until a more comprehensive understanding of the extent of the issue could be determined.

The Greenwich Public Schools/Board of Education, the Town of Greenwich and the GHS MISA Building Committee are working in collaboration to address the environmental concerns of the fields at Greenwich High School.

Licensed Environmental Professionals have been contracted to plan for and conduct more comprehensive testing.

The Town, State Departments of Health and Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have also been consulted

BYRAM RESIDENTS SAY THE GREENWICH TIME'S LOCAL NEWS COVERAGE IS A JOKE

Hearst Newspapers daily illustrates a point on what’s wrong with much of the “local news media” today.

The Greenwich Time's news gatherers with great access to specific click of the town's news makers and they are inclined to ‘pitch them softballs’ rather than ask the more important in-depth questions.

The good news (pun intended) here is that access is rarely an absolute requirement for solid, in-depth reporting. In fact, with smart research (clue sniffing) and an understanding of the beat they cover a news gatherer can dig deep and drill out the facts to develop a good story with.

There is a reason that the money losing Greenwich Time can only distribute 5,000 to 6,000 papers a day and that the New York Times has a better penetration rate in the area.

Greenwich Time reporters just run town hall and board of education press releases through the spell checker, before hitting the publish button. If the Greenwich Time wants to stop its steady decline, then it needs to get and hit the bricks and talk to the towns taxpayers and parents..

08/23/11 Greenwich Youth Conservation Project Worked At Byram Shore This Summer

For more than 30 years, the Greenwich Youth Conservation Project – coordinated through the Greenwich Department of Social Services and funded through private donations – has provided 14 and 15 year olds with a chance to participate in a two-week supervised, outdoor work experience with an educational component and added-value all around.

For those offered a slot – there is an interview process, a mandatory family orientation, and, sadly, a wait list totaling more than 100 teens for this summer alone – any downside to working in the heat and humidity is outweighed by the camaraderie, socialization and significant improvements to the numerous town-owned green spaces.

Christina Nappi is the Greenwich’s Social Services Youth Service Coordinator, who is back for her fifth summer supervising the project.

The projects volunteer advisory board that includes Mary Hull, Frank Smurlo and Barbara Bollman spearheads fundraising efforts.

For most participants, the project is their first paid work experience, with a paycheck totaling $225 for two weeks of weeding, pruning, painting, clearing brush and planting trees.

Recently the teens worked on projects at Byram Shore.

The also worked at the Pinetum, Tod’s Point, Grass Island and Bruce Park, to name a few.

Friendship is a major benefit of the program.

Often times the teens take pride in their work, by bring their families back and they see some of the plantings they have done.

The kids learn about the program from a variety of sources. Some have older siblings who did the project in the past.

Sometimes they find out about the program from the Student Employment Services at GHS.

On a typical day the kids will work from 8-11:30, break for lunch and then have a guest speaker on a relatable teen topic such as cyber-bullying.

The educational component comes via speakers such as adolescent psychologist, Dr. Barbara Greenberg from Silver Hill Hospital, whose presentation, ‘Talking to Your Parents,’ was popular with the teens.

They also had speakers from Stamford’s Center for Sexual Assault, Greenwich Family Youth Options talking about alcohol and drug awareness, and a Stamford probation officer who gave an overview of the juvenile justice system.

The estate of Dyne Sedgwick Jensen has listed for sale a seven-bedroom, eight-bath home at 125 Byram Shore Road in Greenwich for $7.5 million.

The 5,468-square-foot house was built in 1986 in Byram. It is located in the Byram Shores subdivision. Laurie Smith of Greenwich Fine Properties is the listing agent for the house.

Ms. Sedgwick was a Conover fashion model and was known as Norman Rockwell's "Miss Liberty" on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post.

She graduated from Syracuse University, where she majored in speech and drama.

Sedgwick died in March 2011.

According to BlockShopper.com, there have been 407 home sales in Greenwich during the past 12 months, with a median sales price of $980,000.

08/21/11 Thefts From Cars Continue To Plague Byram Residents

Greenwich Police continue to investigate a long string of car burglaries which in most cases, are caused by residents leaving an open invitation to thieves - literally.

In the last few months there close to a dozen thefts from Byram cars parked in driveways or in front of homes, according to police reports.

The Byram thieves generally took small amounts of cash and personal electronic devices.

In several cases, the cars were left unlocked, police said.

However, many Byram residents are demanding more police patrols.

Earlier this year, police investigated several similar burglaries in the Byram section of town.

08/18/11 Was Superintendent of Schools Sidney Freund Good For The Children Of Byram

This week, three months after he stunned the town by announcing his resignation, Superintendent of Schools Sidney Freund will spend his last days in Greenwich.

Now that the initial shock has worn off, Board of Education and Byram officials, along with parents and other stakeholders have started to reflected on Freund's two years as Greenwich schools chief.

Freund's tenure may have been brief, but it was filled with challenges, as well as significant achievements. Debates about expanding the International Baccalaureate program into Western Middle School in Byram.

People in the Byram community have long called for cuts to the number of administrators and to this goal not much was accomplished by Freund.

Many Byram parents and teachers odds with the superintendent, but they seem to take a somewhat balanced look at Freund's impact on Greenwich overall.

The feeling Generally is that in certain respects he left the district better than he found it.

But, in many other respects, however, he left the district much worse than he found it. The school district's credibility with the public was compromised by the manner in which the superintendent undertook International Baccalaureate program, and his unprofessional handling of issues surrounding his abrupt voluntary resignation.

Greenwich Board of Education member Marianna Ponns Cohen has repeatedly accused Freund of committing the town financially to the IB program without the authorization of the full school board.

When explaining his decision to resign, Freund cited his increasingly tense relationship with Ponns Cohen and school board member Peter Sherr, who both voted against starting negotiations on a two-year contract extension for the superintendent a few days before he made his announcement.

Many Byram parents answer to the question about Freund's tenure lies with Byram's scores on state exams, which have fallen in many areas.

Many parents think that speaks for itself.

If you examine where Byram students are now versus where they were when Freund came in, then you must draw a conclusion that he was bad for soom of Greenwich's most disadvantaged children.

Overall Test scores suffered for Greenwich students throughout the district.

The website SchoolDigger.com, which uses Connecticut Mastery Test and Connecticut Academic Performance Test scores to rank school districts put Greenwich at No. 41 in the state in 2009, and No. 48 out of 165 school districts this year.

Like it or not Byram children who want to go to college and escape poverty we are judged by test scores.

Greenwich has suffered falling test scores for the past two years and the declining percentage of Greenwich students taking and passing at least one Advanced Placement exam, despite high enrollment in AP courses, in his critique of Freund's tenure.

Given the declines in academic achievement across a range of measures, the multiple actions to weaken and dismantle the ALP program, the continued poor performance of our AP program, and the back-door tactics employed to turn Greenwich into an IB school system from grades 6-12 causes many Byram parents and teachers to give Freund two thumbs down.

Few can conclude that our school system is better off today than two years ago when Dr. Freund arrived.

If there is a silver lining to Freund's resignation for Byram parents, it's that "the community is finally alert to the problems of our school system.

This spring 14 candidates stepped forward to run for the Board of Education, a number that is somewhat of an all-time record.

Both Republicans and Democrats have expressed their unhappiness with the state of our schools, and demanded change for the students in Byram and other areas of Greenwich.

If Byram parents and teachers has to give Superintendent of Schools Sidney Freund a grade it would probaly be incomplete, because of his short tenure and the abrupt way he left the children of the district.

Greenwich could be in danger of losing its AAA bond rating from Moody's, which recently put the town on a negative outlook list.

Moody's, a member of the big three credit ratings agencies, put on notice Aug. 4 that their top borrowing status could be at risk.

Greenwich has a negative outlook, which basically means there's a risk of downgrade over the next year or two.

Greenwich been consistently rated triple-A in recent decades.

If Greenwich was downgraded, the immediate impact would be higher interest costs.

Bonding had been commonplace up until 1933, when the town, saddled with debt, decided to go in a new direction of pay-as-you-go.

For decades, Greenwich never went to the bond market with the exception of sewer debt.

Greenwich turned to short-term borrowing to augment tax revenues to pay for capital items in recent years, resorting to long-term bonds for sewer improvements and other projects in which the town will get a guaranteed return on its investment through fees.

The town is currently carrying $129 million in debt, a total that excludes $17 million in potential borrowing for a new music instruction space and auditorium at Greenwich High School and $15.6 million in potential borrowing for other projects.

The town of Greenwich have to make a decision on how much to borrow for GHS auditorium or other capital projects until January 2012,

In an attempt to prevent a Moody's downgrade the Board of Estimate and Taxation recently imposed a $210 million cap on borrowing.

The new policy also limits the amount of money the town can apply toward debt service and interest payments to 70 percent of the capital tax levy, the amount of tax revenue dedicated to infrastructure projects and equipment upgrades.

The town is currently taxing property owners for $32 million for capital items.

In an effort to prevent a Moody's downgrade, the town also adopted a policy that requires it to keep a cash reserve at the end of each fiscal year that is equivalent to 5 to 10 percent of anticipated operating expenses.

Greenwich residents want to know how this could of happened to Greenwich and what happened to all of those the town reserves?

While many in Town say the Republican administration has done a poor job of managing the towns finances over the last decade, there is plenty of blame to go around.

Well part of the problem is politicians like Larry Simon who has his head in the sand.

Clueless Larry Simon who Is the finance board's longest tenured member is running around Greenwich, sounding like an extremist TEA Party lunatic saying,"This is not newsworthy!!!!"

Thank goodness Larry Simon and his partner in crime on the Billy Kelly are going to forgo running for re-election to the Board of Estimate and Taxation.

It was just five months ago that Bill Kelly was publicly proclaiming,"The BET's in good hands. They'll be fine."

Apparently, Kelly was unaware that Moody's was pouring over the towns books wondering what happened to all those cash reserves and where did all of this short term borrowing come from?

As I said above .....

08/18/11 Byram Area History

Down on Weaver Street in Greenwich, there is a small stone house that looked to be a very old structure.

If you read Rachel Carley's "Building Greenwich," which states, the "Fieldstone Solomon Merritt house is the oldest known masonry structure in Greenwich. It was probably built soon after 1770, when Merritt purchased the site located on Weaver Street."

At that time Weaver Street was the primary road from the Post Road north to a mill owned by the Merritt family near the Byram River in the Glenville area.

Stratified granite was the preferred material, as the stone split easily, and could be broken up with a hammer. Quarrying was often done on the ledges and out croppings exposed by water on the outer curve of a river bend.

Often the stone was brought to the building site by raft, less difficult than hauling trees over land from the woods where they were felled.

According to the histories, there was little stone building in our town prior to the Solomon Merritt house at 137 Weaver Street, even though there was a goodly amount of granite in the area.

When one considers the amount of stone walls all over the place in Greenwich, and the many stone chimneys and lovely fireplaces, it is interesting that more stone houses were not built.

Think of all the Georgian houses of stone erected today.

The author mentions the chimney base in the 1750 Nathaniel Peck, Jr., house in Old Greenwich, which measures twelve by fourteen feet, and the fireplace opening in the parlor, which is six feet across.

By the late 1700s, brick became the masonry of choice, although for financial reasons stone was still used in cellars. Another fascinating historical house in our town.

The war chests of Democrats John Blankley and Drew Marzullo, running mates for first selectman and selectman, added up to $38,188 at the June 30 close of the second quarter.

Republicans Peter Tesei and David Theis had $29,934 between them during the same period, the most recent for which fundraising totals were available
Tesei raised $31,255 from 113 donors, including former U.S. Senate candidate and former WWE Chief Executive Linda McMahon, who gave Tesei $250.

Tesei's campaign spent $1,431, leaving him with a balance of $29,793.

Blankley finished the quarter with $22,140 cash on hand for his challenge of Tesei, including a personal contribution of $1,000 to his own campaign
Blankley a Representative Town Meeting member who runs Flagship Networks Inc., a Greenwich-based information technology company.

The three seats on the board are filled by the winners in the first selectman and selectman races, as well as the second-place finisher with the most votes in the two races.

Theis, who is seeking a second term as a selectman, finishing the second quarter with $141 cash on hand that was leftover from his 2009 campaign.

Marzullo started the second quarter with $6,700 cash on hand and ended with $16,048, raising $15,705 in contributions from 107 donors and spending $6,356.
A fourth-generation town resident who is a paramedic for Greenwich Emergency Medical Service.

At a time when we are beginning to think about the new Jewish year, and about tasks ahead for the fall season, when some of us are relishing those last few days of vacation, and considering, ever so reluctantly, the imminent demands of work, school and life in general, I've been pondering a new look at the idea of a "job description." At seminary, as a young student, I don't know that a job description ever would have realistically prepared me and my colleagues for the rabbinic life that lay ahead. A rabbi's job can be as diverse and varied as the seasons, ranging from pastoral work, counseling, and synagogue administration on one day, to visiting the sick, teaching learners of every age and background, and studying and preaching the next.

Additionally, on any given day, a rabbi travels the full gamut of human experience, moving from place to place, and from person to person, confronting the joys and fears, celebrations and crises of those who face life's moments through the lens of faith, and also in the moments we all experience, when our hold on faith slips from our grasp. In the context of these faith questions, I also think about how we share the task of upholding our Jewish peoplehood, and defining our place in a world that we, as Jews, are supposed to leave just a little bit better than we found it. It made me wonder: what exactly is a Jew's "job description?" Obviously, there are many possible answers, but the one I like best is that a Jew must cultivate the ability to effectively look inward so then we can then, both as a people and as individuals, productively look outward.

The primary mechanism, by which we look inward in a Jewish context, is through engaging in and with our traditional liturgy. When we truly hear words of Torah, prayer, and sacred song within our hearts, minds and souls, we try to better understand who we are, and what God expects of us. Through the contextual elements of translation from Hebrew to English (and vice versa) and by listening to sacred melodies ranging from the ancient tunes that have come down through the generations, to the modern songs our children bring home, like new friends, from summer camp, we can experience our liturgy in both old and new ways that connect us both with our Jewish past and our people's future. And finally, with our kavannah (prayerful intentionality) we can learn how to utilize the words of prayer to focus our gaze inward, and prompt ourselves to change for the better.

There's a story of a young rabbi who arrived in a town to become a prophet. He stood in the town square and yelled his message out at all the people: "Repent and return to God!" For decades the rabbi took his position in the town square, and shouted out the same words: "Repent and return to God!" One day, a young child came to the rabbi and said to him: "Why do you bother with this? No one ever listens to you." The rabbi smiled at the young boy and gently replied: "When I first came to this place, I had hoped to change the world. After many years, I hoped to change the town. Then, I hoped to change just a few people. Now, I preach here only in the hope to effectively change myself."

Much of our disappointment in life can result from the notion of a "job description." Without realizing it, in our minds, we often create job descriptions for all of the people in our lives. We all live with the idea of the ideal spouse and perfect children, colleagues who never make mistakes, and friendship without flaws. And when the very human people around us don't live up to the expectations we set forth for them in our minds, we end up like the rabbi in the town square, yelling our messages of change to an audience that remains unmoved by our pleas. Even when we have another person's best interest at heart in our idea of what they should be, it is too easy to get caught up in the idea of fixing someone else's faults when we don't think we need to do anything to fix our own. We spend too much wasted energy on trying to change others, and not enough spiritual energy on attempting to change ourselves for the better.

I think that the rabbi who was intent on becoming a prophet was on to something very important: he knew that in the effort to ultimately change himself, he could impact the world. He narrowed his job description from the goal of changing others - a goal that comes with the probability of unmet expectations - to the goal of strengthening his own faith in himself. The fact that he could answer a child's question with wisdom and understanding signifies his potential influence on that child, and through that child, the future. Rabbinic tradition teaches that each of us "stands on the cusp between salvation and destruction." Each and every action we choose to perform - or not -- can tip the Divine scale of Judgment one way or the other: not just for ourselves, but for the entire world.

Consider the impact that you may have on that Divine scale of Judgment! This Shabbat, take a moment to check in on how you are doing - as a person, as a peer, as a parent, as a partner. Clearly, our individual choices, our questions and our answers have the power, according to Jewish tradition, to not only change us, but change the entire world. We can make a positive difference only when we are unafraid to commit to careful daily self-examination - checking in to see how we are measuring up to our own job description - and making sure that we engage in appropriate follow-up with those whose lives we impact - and, of course, ourselves.

As we look to a new season, may we find the courage to look inward and take a sacred self-inventory, and may we allow life and love's sweetness to help us re-write our own job descriptions, and guide us in how we wish to better perform more acts of loving kindness in the days and years to come.

Our member, Nicole Bier's mother, Nancy Nathanson, has just undergone a bone marrow transplant. For those who do not know Nicole, she is mother of Sam who is in the 4's at Temple Sholom, and she is also the mother of Mathew and Seth who are in 3rd grade at Carmel Academy. Nancy is currently a patient at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Her treatment requires regular blood and platelet transfusions, and Nicole, Nancy and their family would deeply appreciate your donation of blood and/or platelets and requests that you ask others you know to donate. Donations not used by Nancy will be released for use by other patients, many of whom are children.

To benefit Nancy, all designated donations must be made in the Blood Donor Room of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Parashat Devarim

Along with millions of people around the world, my heart was shattered by the news of the murders in Oslo and Utøya, Norway two weeks ago. What was truly saddening, among the many acts of senseless violence and the incomprehensible news of so many young lives lost, was to also observe the Norwegian people struggling with the news that these acts of atrocity had been committed by one of their own. The terrible, heart-wrenching tragedy that was the evil act of Anders Behring Brevick's murderous rampage has been described as the works of a "Christian terrorist." As a Jew, I don't recognize anything Christian about Brevick, any more than I recognize the beauty and reverence of Islam in the evil acts of Muslim terrorists, or the twisted, perverted interpretation of Judaism that motivates the actions of a Jewish terrorist.

Any single individual may claim that their beliefs are anchored in ethical monotheism, but the horrific choice to commit murder literally negates the validity of such a claim. Once a life is taken; once a choice is made to take God's power of life and death into one's own hands; once an innocent soul is made to suffer, even as these perpetrators claim to be holy, there is no God present. And in our struggle to comprehend these actions, this is perhaps when we most keenly feel God's absence.

Brevick is without religiosity. His altar is hatred; his worship is a glorification of the self; and his holy texts are manifestos of violence and fear. He is as far from God as a human being can ever be. The ideals of Christianity; like the ideals of Judaism and Islam; teach us, in the seemingly simple three-word commandment love thy neighbor, that we share a fundamental understanding: all human beings are created in the image of God. Denial of this primary teaching and making exceptions to the universality of this teaching places those who choose these interpretations outside of the normative ethical monotheistic framework.

In the Hebrew bible, the creation story that is so much a fundamental part of every Abrahamic religion teaches us that all human beings are created "in the image of God." In Torah, we know this phrase as B'Tzelem Elohim. The mitzvah of seeing each and every human being "in the image of God" is the divine imperative of knowing that every individual life is precious, unique, and holy. It is not easy to master the skill of looking at a stranger and yet seeing a brother or a sister. And yet, Torah teaches us, in the commandment it most often repeats - more than thirty-three times - that we must love the stranger.

Loving the stranger means that sharing a human heritage of our Divine creation is - or should be - enough to enable us to see the spark of God's holy light in one another. Martin Buber taught that God exists in the space between human beings; God is found in the meaningful relationship we can create with each other. But there are still those who use the space between human beings to create wider gulfs, cultivating the darkness and hatred that can emerge so easily when we fail to acknowledge our common humanity - and our common divinity. And the fundamental idolatrous act of any individual is to deny the presence of God's image in another, or the Godliness that has the potential to exist between people.

Islamic, Christian, and Judaic texts all acknowledge our human needs and our frailties. The commandments to love God, to love the stranger and to love our neighbor all exist because they are challenging. And perhaps the commandment that we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves can be the most challenging of all. It is so easy to believe that we can live without love. Our modern world, with its instant access to every conceivable human need and desire, can push us to believe that we do not need real human connections to survive. But in losing our connection to others, we also lose sight of our own intrinsic humanity. When we have a true foundation in the lessons of love taught by our sacred texts, we learn how to perceive our own holy uniqueness. The love we show to God, to the stranger, to our neighbor and to ourselves is qualified and quantified by our every human action and interaction. Without these sacred interactions, we lose the ability to see and live in the world of God's creation, turning instead to the gods of ego, power, and satisfaction. In the worst instances of this terrible turning, there are those who learn how to hate. There are those who forget that every life is both human and holy. And there are those that destroy the divine potential in others, and in themselves.

Brevick's evil acts were grown in an incubator of hate and anger. His very being is a denial of the religious imperative to love and see the divine image in all human beings. And in the wake of his actions, we must not powerlessly fear further acts of atrocity, but instead, realize that God is present in the aftermath: in the responders who put their lives in danger every day in the service of combating terror; in the messages of grief and healing that we around the world share with the Norwegian people, and in the realization that we further prevent the growth of evil when we distance ourselves from hate. It is our divine and human duty to help others to do the same: to do our best to live at a distance from our own angry/hateful thoughts, and substitute in their place feelings of genuine friendship, fellowship, love and compassion, and most importantly, acts of loving kindness.

Got Game? Join the WJBL!

We're looking for a few good 'ballers to put together one or more Temple Sholom teams for the 2011-12 season of the Westchester Jewish Basketball League. There are three divisions: 5th - 6th grade, 7th - 8th grade, and 9th - 12th grade. Both boys and girls who are not a senior varsity roster are eligible to play (teams are mixed gender, but mostly boys) and every player will participate in every game.

The season runs from late November through early March, and games are once a week.

If you're interested in playing or coaching, please come to our WJBL Informational Meeting in the Davis Lounge on Wednesday, September 21st, at 7:30pm.

07/28/11 Byram Firefighters Respond To Western Greenwich House Fire - Cat Killed And Firefighter Injured

A lit cigarette sparked an early-afternoon fire Wednesday that badly damaged a home off Weaver Street in western Greenwich and killed a family cat.

The unattended cigarette was left on the porch and it began a blaze that raced up the exterior of the back of the home and tore into the attic.

A firefighter also suffered a minor injury battling the fire, which broke out around 1:30 p.m. and was contained by 2:05 p.m.

The house, a single-family home at 27 Deep Gorge Road, has been deemed unsafe for living due to the extent of the fire’s damage.

There was heavy fire damage to the second floor and the attic. There was also heavy smoke and water damage to the first floor.

A woman who was home at the time of the fire emerged unscathed.

It was unclear if the woman had left the unattended cigarette on the porch.

The firefighter who was hurt had a minor injury to his knee.

The cat died of smoke inhalation.

No further information was available on the cat.

About 25 firefighters from the Glenville, Byram, Cos Cob, North Street and Central stations responded to the fire.

Built in 1960, the 1,979-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bathroom Colonial split-level sits on a one-acre property.

The home, which the town’s tax assessor’s office says is owned by Maurice and Maria Musilli, is listed for sale for $1.245 million.

The Musillis could not be reached for comment.

02/09/11 Three Byram residents charged in N.Y. stabbing

Four people -- including three Byram residents -- have been arrested in connection with a Port Chester, N.Y., stabbing that occurred late last month, according to police.

Lt. James Ladeairous, of the Port Chester Police Department, said officers had been investigating a Jan. 23 stabbing that occurred after a fight broke out at a Parker Avenue party.

David Enrique Lopez, 19, of Port Chester, was at the party when he allegedly broke a window and was thrown out of the house by the victim, who was hosting the party.
"He came back with the three other people and the girl knocked on the door," Ladeairous said. "When the victim looked out, he only saw the girl so he opened it. Then they all busted in on him."

The victim was stabbed with a folding knife. His injuries were not serious, police said.

The three other people who assisted Lopez that night have been identified as 18-year-old Tamar Constanza, Nicholas Madinabeitia, 19, and Stewart Castro, 20, all of Byram.
"We are not sure which one stabbed him," Ladeairous said. "They all fled the area."
Police spoke with partygoers who gave them information on the three men. Constanza, Madinabeitia and Castro were arrested days after the stabbing. Lopez was arrested earlier this week. They were each charged with first-degree burglary. More charges could be pending.

"Lopez knew we were looking for him and he turned himself in," Ladeairous said.
