Rick Torres Receives Endorsement Of Conservative Party In Effort To Replace Congressman Jim Himes In Byram

The Conservative Party of Connecticut has endorsed Bridgeport resident Rick Torres for U.S. Congress.

Torres, who lives in Black Rock and owns and operates the neighborhood’s Harborview Market with his wife Michele, is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic freshman U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.

The Conservative Party’s written endorsement described Torres as “a first-generation Cuban immigrant who has lived the American dream.”

A party release from Jesse Haskell, Connecticut Conservative Party USA chairman, stated that Torres “fled communist Cuba in the 1960s and arrived in Connecticut with literally the clothes on his back. He grew up in an impoverished neighborhood but never stopped believing things would get better. In high school he excelled in both athletics and academics, which earned him a scholarship to Washington University.”

The party endorsement described Torres as “a proven conservative leader who pledges to shrink the size of government, reduce spending, and provide tax relief for all Americans.”

Torres ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2003, running well for a Republican against Mayor John Fabrizi. He served as city Republican Town Committee chairman before being forced out after endorsing Democratic state Rep. Christopher L. Caruso in the 2007 election.

He is one of a handful of Republicans seeking the GOP nomination this fall, including former state Sen. Rob Russo of Bridgeport.
